Development and Evaluation of Comfort Assessment Approaches for Passengers in Autonomous Vehicles

Passenger comfort is a critical factor in user acceptance of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Despite existing methods for passenger comfort assessment, new approaches to assessing passenger comfort in AVs may be valuable to the automotive industry. In this paper, continuous pressing-based and discrete smartphone-based approaches for comfort assessment were designed and implemented in a user study. Participants used the two approaches to evaluate their comfort levels in an experimental study based on a high-fidelity autonomous driving simulator. Performances of the two approaches in assessing comfort levels were analyzed and compared. In general, the discrete approach showed better measurement repeatability and lower measurement bias than the continuous approach. The performance gap of the continuous approach could be reduced with proper post-processing measures. Discussions on the potential uses of the approaches were also raised.

Development of Endurance Testing Apparatus Simulating Wheel Dynamics and Environment on Lunar Terrain

This paper entails the design and development of a NASA testing system used to simulate wheel operation in a lunar environment under different loading conditions. The test system was developed to test the design of advanced nonpneumatic wheels to be used on the NASA All-Terrain Hex-Legged Extra-Terrestrial Explorer (ATHLETE). The ATHLETE, allowing for easy maneuverability around the lunar surface, provides the capability for many research and exploration opportunities on the lunar surface that were not previously possible. Each leg, having six degrees of freedom, allows the ATHLETE to accomplish many tasks not available on other extra-terrestrial exploration platforms. The robotic vehicle is expected to last longer than previous lunar rovers.

Development of New Turbulence Models and Computational Methods for Automotive Aerodynamics and Heat Transfer

This paper is a review of turbulence models and computational methods that have been produced at Clemson University's Advanced Computational Research Laboratory. The goal of the turbulence model development has been to create physics-based models that are economically feasible and can be used in a competitive environment, where turnaround time is a critical factor. Given this goal, all of the work has been focused on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations in the eddy-viscosity framework with the majority of the turbulence models having three transport equations in addition to mass, momentum, and energy. Several areas have been targeted for improvement in turbulence modeling for complex flows such as those found in motorsports aerodynamics: the effects of streamline curvature and rotation on the turbulence field, laminar-turbulent transition, and separated shear layer rollup and breakdown.

Effects of Framing on Tradespace Exploration Decision-Making for Vehicle Design

Tradespace exploration (TSE) describes the activity occurring early in the design process through which stakeholders explore a broad solution space in search of more-optimal alternatives. In doing so, these stakeholders attempt to maximize the utility inherent in the chosen solution while understanding the tradeoffs and compromises that may be required to find an acceptable solution. In the field of vehicle design, tradespaces are often comprised of vast amounts of alternatives which increases the complexity of the decision-making process. Additionally, the number of stakeholders has grown, as decision-makers seek to include more variety in both perspectives and expertise. As such, decision-making stakeholders can often find themselves working at odds and attempting to maximize vastly different objectives in the process. One way to rectify these contrasting viewpoints can be to intentionally introduce a group framing prior to the start of decision making.

Effects of Tire and Vehicle Design Characteristics on Rollover of Tractor Semi-Trailers

Understanding the effects of tire and vehicle properties on the rollover propensity of tractor semi-trailer trucks is essential. The major objective of the project described by this paper was to develop a simplified computational tool that can be used to understand and predict the effects of various tire characteristics and truck design parameters on rollover under steady cornering and non-tripped conditions. In particular, this tool may be used to help understand the basic mechanisms governing rollover propensity of trucks equipped with New Generation Wide Single tires as contrasted with conventional tires. Effects of tire flexibility, roll-compliant suspensions, fifth - wheel lash and nonlinear suspension characteristics are included in the model and are presented below. Design parameter data used as input to the model were obtained from Michelin Americas Research and Development Corporation.

Elicitation, Computational Representation, and Analysis of Mission and System Requirements

Strategies for evaluating the impact of mission requirements on the design of mission-specific vehicles are needed to enable project managers to assess potential benefits and associated costs of changes in requirements. Top-level requirements that cause significant cascaded difficulties on lower-level requirements should be identified and presented to decision-makers. This paper aims to introduce formal methods and computational tools to enable the analysis and allocation of mission requirements.

Engine-in-the-Loop Study of a Hierarchical Predictive Online Controller for Connected and Automated Heavy-Duty Vehicles

This paper presents a cohesive set of engine-in-the-loop (EIL) studies examining the use of hierarchical model-predictive control for fuel consumption minimization in a class-8 heavy-duty truck intended to be equipped with Level-1 connectivity/automation. This work is motivated by the potential of connected/automated vehicle technologies to reduce fuel consumption in both urban/suburban and highway scenarios. The authors begin by presenting a hierarchical model-predictive control scheme that optimizes multiple chassis and powertrain functionalities for fuel consumption. These functionalities include: vehicle routing, arrival/departure at signalized intersections, speed trajectory optimization, platooning, predictive optimal gear shifting, and engine demand torque shaping. The primary optimization goal is to minimize fuel consumption, but the hierarchical controller explicitly accounts for other key objectives/constraints, including operator comfort and safe inter-vehicle spacing.

Evaluating Drivers’ Preferences and Understanding of Powertrain and Advanced Driver Assistant Systems Symbols for Current and Future Vehicles

With the dramatic increase in vehicle technology, the availability of a wide range of powertrains, and the development of advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS), instrument cluster interfaces have become more complex, increasing the demand on drivers. Understanding the needs and preferences of a diverse group of drivers is essential for the development of digital instrument cluster interfaces that improve driver’s understanding of critical information about the vehicle. This study investigated drivers’ understanding and preferences related to powertrain and ADAS symbols presented on instrument clusters. Participants answered questions that evaluated nine symbol’s comprehension, familiarity, and helpfulness. Then, participants were presented with information from the owner’s manual for each symbol and responded if the information changed their understanding of the symbol.

Evaluating Drivers’ Understanding of Warning Symbols Presented on In-Vehicle Digital Displays Using a Driving Simulator

Since 1989, ISO has published procedures for developing and testing public information symbols (ISO 9186), while the SAE standard for in-vehicle icon comprehension testing (SAE J2830) was first published in 2008. Neither testing method was designed to evaluate the comprehension of symbols in modern vehicles that offer digital instrument cluster interfaces that afford new levels of flexibility to further improve drivers’ understanding of symbols. Using a driving simulator equipped with an eye tracker, this study investigated drivers’ understanding of six automotive symbols presented on in-vehicle displays. Participants included 24 teens, 24 adults, and 24 senior drivers. Symbols were presented in a symbol-only, symbol + short text descriptions, and symbol + long text description conditions. Participants’ symbol comprehension, driving performance, reaction times, and eye glance times were measured.

Evaluation of CarFit® Criteria Compliance and Knowledge of Seat Adjustment

Improper fit in a vehicle will affect a driver’s ability to reach the steering wheel and pedals, view the roadway and instrument gauges, and allow vehicle safety features to protect the driver during a crash. CarFit® is a community outreach program to educate older drivers on proper “fit” within their personal vehicle. A subset of measurements from CarFit® were used to quantify the “fit” of 97 older drivers over 60 and 20 younger drivers, ages 30-39, in their personal vehicles. Binary, logistic regression was used to assess the likelihood of drivers meeting the CarFit® measurement criteria prior to and after CarFit® education. The results showed older drivers were five times more likely than younger drivers to meet the CarFit® criteria for line of sight above the steering wheel, suggesting that younger drivers would also benefit from CarFit® education.

Evaluation of an Automotive Simulator Based Driver Safety Training Program for Run-Off-the-Road and Recovery

Despite the growing acceptance of driver education programs, there remains a class of unpredictable and dangerous vehicle situations for which very little training or education is offered. Included in this list is a condition called run-off-the-road (ROR) which occurs when the wheels of the vehicle leave the paved surface of the road and begin to travel on the lower friction surfaces of the shoulder or side of the road. Unsuccessful recovery from ROR contributes to an overwhelming percentage of motorized vehicle crash fatalities and injuries. Most present solutions involve roadway infrastructure management and driver assistance systems. While these solutions have contributed varying amounts of success to the ROR problem, they remain limited as they do not directly address the critical cause of ROR crashes which is driver performance errors.

Experimental Comparison of Diesel and Wet Ethanol on an Opposed-Piston Two Stroke (OP2S) Engine

Renewable fuels, such as the alcohols, ammonia, and hydrogen, have a high autoignition resistance. Therefore, to enable these fuels in compression ignition, some modifications to existing engine architectures is required, including increasing compression ratio, adding insulation, and/or using hot internal residuals. The opposed-piston two-stroke (OP2S) engine architecture is unique in that, unlike conventional four-stroke engines, the OP2S can control the amount of trapped residuals over a wide range through its scavenging process. As such, the OP2S engine architecture is well suited to achieve compression ignition of high autoignition resistance fuels. In this work, compression ignition with wet ethanol 80 (80% ethanol, 20% water by mass) on a 3-cylinder OP2S engine is experimentally demonstrated. A load sweep is performed from idle to nearly full load of the engine, with comparisons made to diesel at each operating condition.

Experimental Comparison of a Rotary Valvetrain on the Performance and Emissions of a Light Duty Spark Ignition Engine

Rotary valve technology can provide increased flow area and higher discharge coefficients than conventional poppet valves for internal combustion engines. This increase in intake charging efficiency can improve the power density of four-stroke internal combustion engines, particularly at high engine speeds, where flow is choked through conventional poppet valves. In this work, the valvetrain of a light duty single cylinder spark ignition engine was replaced with a rotary valve train. The impact of this valvetrain conversion on performance and emissions was evaluated by comparing spark timing sweeps with lambda ranging from 0.8 to 1.1 at wide open throttle. The results indicated that the rotary valvetrain increased the amount of air trapped at intake valve closing and resulted in a significantly faster burn duration than the conventional valvetrain.

Experimental Study of Low Thermal Inertia Thermal Barrier Coating in a Spark Ignited Multicylinder Production Engine

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have long been studied as a potential pathway to achieve higher thermal efficiency in spark ignition engines. Researchers have studied coatings with different thicknesses and thermophysical properties to counteract the volumetric efficiency penalty associated with TBCs in spark ignition. To achieve an efficiency benefit with minimal charge heating during the intake stroke, low thermal inertia coatings characterized by their larger temperature swings are required. To study the impact of low thermal inertia coatings in spark ignition, coatings were applied to the cylinder head, piston crown, intake and exhaust valve faces, and intake and exhaust valve backsides. Tier III EEE E10 certification gasoline was used to keep the experiments relevant to the present on-road vehicles. This study is aimed at analyzing durability of the coatings as well as efficiency and emissions improvements.

Exploration of Support Methods for Tradespace Exploration

Tradespace exploration (TSE) is an important aspect of the early stages of the design process, in which stakeholders search for the most optimal solutions within a design variable-bounded solution space. This decision-making process requires stakeholders to understand the trade-offs and compromises that may be required to choose a solution. In order for stakeholders to make these decisions appropriately, information must be presented in an efficient manner and should ensure that the trade-offs between solutions are clearly visible. Existing visualizations often struggle to elucidate these trade-offs, and can rapidly become difficult to understand as the dimensionality of the tradespace increases. In this paper, the benefits and drawbacks to these existing methods will be discussed. In addition, this paper will explore potential methods to improve information presentation for TSE, including framing, visual steering, and visualization options.

Fast Engine Torque Variation Compensation for HEVs Using Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Explicit MPC

This research proposes to leverage the fast response time of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) to compensate for crank angle resolved engine torque variations caused by cycle-by-cycle combustion variations. This method reduces powertrain vibration and enables engine calibrations with high combustion variation that produces low fuel consumption. This research integrates a Field Oriented Control (FOC) strategy with an Explicit Model Predictive Control (EMPC) to trace previewed current references. The previewed current references are computed from the engine torque difference between predicted nominal operation and the measured torque output. This research reveals that the MPC can track a d-q current reference without overshoot, rendering current magnitude constraints unnecessary in the MPC formulation. A control rate penalty is used to tune the aggressiveness of transient voltage demand and meet with the DC voltage limit.

GT-Suite Modeling of Thermal Barrier Coatings in a Multi-Cylinder Turbocharged DISI Engine for Catalyst Light-Off Delay Improvement

Catalytic converters, which are commonly used for after-treatment in SI engines, exhibit poor performance at lower temperatures. This is one of the main reasons that tailpipe emissions drastically increase during cold-start periods. Thermal inertia of turbocharger casing prolongs the catalyst warm-up time. Exhaust enthalpy management becomes crucial for a turbocharged direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engine during cold-start periods to quickly heat the catalyst and minimize cold-start emissions. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), because of their low thermal inertia, reach higher surface temperatures faster than metal walls, thereby blocking heat transfer and saving enthalpy for the catalyst. The TBCs applied on surfaces that exchange heat with exhaust gases can increase the enthalpy available for the catalyst warm-up.

Handling Deviation for Autonomous Vehicles after Learning from Small Dataset

Learning only from a small set of examples remains a huge challenge in machine learning. Despite recent breakthroughs in the applications of neural networks, the applicability of these techniques has been limited by the requirement for large amounts of training data. What’s more, the standard supervised machine learning method does not provide a satisfactory solution for learning new concepts from little data. However, the ability to learn enough information from few samples has been demonstrated in humans. This suggests that humans may make use of prior knowledge of a previously learned model when learning new ones on a small amount of training examples. In the area of autonomous driving, the model learns to drive the vehicle with training data from humans, and most machine learning based control algorithms require training on very large datasets. Collecting and constructing training data set takes a huge amount of time and needs specific knowledge to gather relevant information.

Impact of Thermal Barrier Coatings on Intake and Exhaust Valves in a Spark Ignition Engine

Spark ignition knock is highly sensitive to changes in intake air temperature. Hot surface temperatures due to ceramic thermal barrier coatings increase knock propensity by elevating the incoming air temperature, thus mitigating the positive impacts of low heat transfer losses by requiring spark retard to avoid knock. Low thermal inertia coatings (i.e. Temperature swing coatings) have been proposed as a means of reducing or eliminating the open cycle charge heating penalty of traditional TBCs through a combination of low thermal conductivity and low volumetric heat capacity materials. However, in order to achieve a meaningful gain in efficiency, a significant fraction of the combustion chamber must be coated. In this study, a coated piston and intake and exhaust valves with coated combustion faces, backsides, and stems are installed in a single-cylinder research engine to evaluate the effect of high coated fractions of the combustion chamber in a knock-sensitive architecture.

Impact of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) on Battery Degradation in a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly recognized as an effective solution in the battle against climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Lithium-ion batteries have become the standard for energy storage in the automobile industry, widely used in EVs due to their superior characteristics compared to other batteries. The growing popularity of the Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept can be attributed to its surplus energy storage capacity, positive environmental impact, and the reliability and stability of the power grid. However, the increased utilization of the battery through these integrations can result in faster degradation and the need for replacement. As batteries are one of the most expensive components of EVs, the decision to deploy an EV in V2G operations may be uncertain due to the concerns of battery degradation from the owner’s perspective.
